IMO-certified fire-retardant curtains for boats

Modern ships and large cruise ships have been adapting to the fire safety requirements that are present in the 1974 SOLAS Convention and which was developed by IMO (International Maritime Organization).

The elegant interiors of these shipping tourism giants leave no one indifferent and we find many details not only in their innovative furniture, also inside their elegant cabins, such as their curtains for boats that have the MED 96/98/EC Certification, highlighting for their excellent fireproof qualities in their textile fibers and the variety of their attractive colors.

At Royal Confort we have a wide range of fireproof fabrics with Timón Seal for indoor use of boats in different textures and colors that are used in the manufacture of curtains for the nautical and maritime sector, are accredited and endorsed under the brand MED compliance, proving that it is a product or element for the decoration of cabins suitable for its safety in case of fire, since its fabric does not burn in front of the flame.

For this reason our curtains for boats, in addition to carrying the approval of this certificate issued by the Member States of the EU and ships of affiliated countries, also has the Rudity Seal in each of its manufactures. Whether conventional curtains, bar curtains, visors, blinds, rollers, wall upholstery and bed headboards and all kinds of textile accessories for boats.

Why is the accreditation of specific products and equipment for ships and ships with fire-retardant qualities so important?

In case of fire, all textiles have a vulnerability, especially those that are suspended like curtains. Others such as those used in bedding, i.e. sheets, pillows, duvets, blankets or even the carpets that we see inside these cabins although to a lesser extent because of their horizontal arrangement, they are also at risk of generating toxic fumes in case of Burn.

For this reason, there are also the bed linen provided for in IMO Resolution MSC.307(88). Both these decorative elements and others of equal characteristics have previously passed in our facilities and also independently by accredited laboratories such as Aitex of the relevant fire-retardant tests.

How are the fire-retardant tests to which our boat curtains are subjected?

For both the IMO-SOLAS standard and the European standard EN13773:2003, our curtains are tested by mounting vertically to expose themselves to a flame to see its behaviour towards combustion and the possible emission of toxic fumes.

Among the parameters on which this behavior is studied is the faithful recreating the actual conditions of use while taking a checklist with the possible critical points to be improved.

The following parameters can therefore be distinguished:

  • Flammability or ease of ignition
  • Flame propagation
  • Droplet or particle detachment
  • Heat emission
  • Smoke production

In addition to these tests and their respective review paragraphs, the PEF 2010 Code, together with the relevant amendments to the SOLAS Convention which entered into force on 1 July 2012, includes international requirements for testing laboratories and approval and approval and fire-exposure testing procedures for products listed in Chapter II-2 of the SOLAS Convention, including ship curtains and those relating to building, prevention, detection and firefighting elements in large cruise ships and transport vessels.

At Royal Confort we manufacture all types of M1 fire-retardant curtains now also called Class 1 according to international standards. So they are especially suitable for use in all types of cabins, common areas, restaurant, bridges and all those areas of windows or sectorization that require special curtains for boats. Whether it's cruise ships, warships (military), yachts, merchant ships and all kinds of ships and ocean liners. As well as oil rigs or other facilities equally subject to fire-regulatory extracts.
