Fireproof mattresses for detention centers

Harmful and toxic effects when mattresses are burned in prisons

Despite the security measures in a prison, there are always small gaps where inmates handle illegal items without being seen, such as matches, lighters, mini mobiles, drugs, etc… and there are many prisons that are not yet equipped with preventive elements to prevent the spread of fire or, what is worse, avoid the toxic smoke that this causes by burning mattresses.

The toxicity of many elements when burning in a cell can cause respiratory injury and worse, death. The respiratory tract is the main route of entry into the body for toxic substances from fires.

If a prison, dungeon or detention center for minors is not equipped with approved fireproof mattresses, there is a risk of riots, suicides and damage to other inmates who, due to these fires, end up causing serious damage to the respiratory tract.

Inhaling air at high temperatures can cause damage to the respiratory tract (pulmonary edema and even death by asphyxia), hypotension and complications in the circulatory system, the smoke being a very dangerous mixture of gases, vapors, small liquid and solid particles in suspension. .
All these components of smoke in fires are produced from a combustion in which the oxygen in the air is progressively consumed.
To prevent a mattress from causing a flame or toxic smoke, it must meet some basic requirements after having passed a series of tests in laboratories. These tests are subjected to the foam core of the mattress in accordance with the Spanish and European fire retardant standards UNE-EN 1021, obtained through tests carried out and achieving the PASA (PASS) result.

The sample analyzed in these tests passes favorably the tests evaluating the flammability according to the UNE-EN 1021-1 and UNE-EN 1021-2 regulations, which describe the test method to evaluate the flammability of different combinations of materials.

In these tests, fire-retardant mattresses for prisons are also evaluated with the protection of a cover made of a waterproof, flexible and non-slip polyurethane fabric, breathable, non-allergenic, ecological, anti-mite and fire-retardant.

The fabric of this cover is bioelastic, adapting perfectly to the shape of the mattress once it is covered and resistant. Thanks to its breathable waterproof polyurethane coating, it prevents the burning of fire retardant M1.
