Fireproof upholstery for boats with IMO certificates

In both the nautical sector and large tourist vessels, they are subject to strict fire safety requirements given the difficulty of maintaining 100% safety while these and other types of vessels are sailing the high seas. The safety of these modern ships has been subject since the early 20th century to the international treaties adopted by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) which specify the various regulations relating to integrated materials such as, for example, fireproof upholstery applied to sofas and other coatings such as wall upholstery in boats.

Above all, it should be borne in mind that the materials of yesteryear with which the ships were built and decorated, did not have the same guarantees of safety in case of fire as they are today. That is why, since the beginning of the twentieth century, a succession of major maritime accidents resulted in the deaths of many people, a broad set of international conventions and treaties regulated by the IMO (about 50 in total) were created, supported by literally hundreds of codes, guidelines and recommendations governing virtually every facet of the maritime transport sector, from the project, construction, equipment and operation of ships to the training of seafarers, or from the formation of seafarers, or from the formation of seafarers, or from the project to the scrapyard.

As regards the materials used in the construction and decoration of these large ships, whether for the transport of goods such as those intended for tourism, as is the case of cruise ships, in the SOLAS Convention (first Convention from 1914 to 1974 and successive amendments) , it is mentioned in many headings of the characteristics and the type of tests that must pass the different coatings to be accepted as safe equipment on a boat.

Therefore, these materials include textiles used in boat upholstery, fabrics that at Royal Confort know of their importance and that have undergone numerous tests to adapt to the corresponding regulation according to IMO: in its Resolution MSC.307 (88) Annex I Part 8 ” Recommendation of the “International Marine Organisation” on fire-exposure testing procedures for upholstered furniture.
